If you’re searching for a new job, chances are you will go through quite a few phone interviews. This is a common step in the early phases of the interview process and requires special preparation. Some job seekers think that a phone interview is more laid back, but it’s still a very crucial time to make a good first impression so you can stand out and move on to the next step.
Get Your Basics Ready
Take plenty of time before your interview starts to get your basics all ready so your work station is set up. Here’s what you should have at the ready:
- Resume, job posting, notes you’ve prepared
- Phone and headphones if you want
- Chargers for devices you’re using
- Quiet surroundings without distractions
Do Your Research
To be prepared for your phone interview, you need to do your research on the company, the interviewer(s), and anything you can about the position as well. During your research, gather important points about the company and make notes about your own strengths and skills that you can bring to the job. You should also prepare questions you have about the position, company, or anything else.
During your interview, you can ask about the timeline they have in mind for the interview and hiring process. Don’t come across as too pushy or needed. If you can ask about the timeframe in a calm, matter-of-fact way, it will be well-received. In the end, be patient. You may not hear about the next steps for a few days, and that’s just fine.
Send a ‘Thank You’
Don’t forget to send a thank-you email to your interviewer. You should definitely send one out within 24 hours of your interview, but don’t send one out immediately as it may come across as canned.
Phone interviews are different than in-person interviews, but the preparation is just as important. Following these tips to be successful can help you make a great impression and move on to the next step of the interview process.
